Not all video games are about shooting, is something we often say to parents. Or games that use targets as part of a skill challenge like Osu!, Pianista or Elite Beat Agents. Games like Child of Eden, Rez Infinite or New Pokemon Snap. This can also be games with shooting style targeting that aren't specifically about shooting. Games like Point Blank, Until Dawn Rush of Blood, House of the Dead, Dead Containment and Dead Space Extraction. Sometimes a stand-alone game, and sometimes a special edition of an existing franchise. These can be classic shooting games, tailored for an on-rails experience. You are left with the task of targeting and shooting the enemies as they come into view. On-Rails Shooters and Light-Gun games take over the movement and navigation side of things for you. Shooting games usually require you to navigate through the world as well as dealing with targeting and shooting enemies. However, there are some games that focus on just one aspect of play. Video games are often enjoyable because they task you with juggling multiple responsibilities at the same time (not unlike other parts of life). This level of systems work extends beyond quick reflexes to social understanding, layered decision making, long term strategic thinking and rigorous practice. Players need to consider their environment, other opponents, team-mates, mission objectives, which weapon to use and how much health they have got. While the main aim of most of these games is to shoot enemies in the head to kill them, there are many other things also going on. They usually offer players a range of weapons, each of which behaves differently and require practice to use efficiently. Often called shooter games, or shooters, they test the player's spatial awareness, reflexes, and speed against computer characters and human other players in online games. Like the instinct of children to pick up sticks for imaginary gun-play, this offers players a chance to step into dangerous situations that raise the adrenaline and require high levels of skill and precision. Video games have had a long history of including shooting play. In this entry we are looking at Shooting games. This is designed for people new to gaming, and aims to identify games with the least barriers. In this series, we are learning how different aspects of video games work by playing games that offer an easy introduction to this one concept.
